The site for this project was a lovely, wooded lot along the northeast shore of Sebago Lake. The client was seeking to replace two old, crumbling cottages - the red and white camps - with new structures that embraced the natural environment while providing comfortable, functional spaces for family and friends.
A Maine Camp inspired by the traditional summer cottages of Norway.
Warm and Homey Space
A comfortable living and dining area is warmed by a massive, bouldered, three-sided fireplace. This backs up to a screened porch that sits almost on the ground, only a few feet from the sound of the waves lapping on the lake. Up a central stairway lies a quiet guest bedroom and bunkroom that sleeps four more, plus a generous built-in desk lit with windows on three sides and views out to the lake beyond. Each bedroom in the small camp includes an attached porch for morning coffee and a quiet spot to read.
The muted color palette and natural materials on the exterior of the camp further blend the structure into the surrounding trees and landscape. Despite the proximity to the water, it can be hard to spot from passing boats.
The Results
The new “red camp” – not red at all, but the name of its predecessor stuck – stretches out to the shoreline, and is set flush to the ground to connect the interior and screened living spaces seamlessly with the site.
