The Barn House in Kennebunkport, ME, completed in mid-2023, sits on a 4.9-acre former farm. The design reflects the site's history, featuring a composition of linked ‘barns’ with an ‘exploded’ floor plan for enhanced privacy and landscape engagement.
Honoring History Through Thoughtful Design
The design process focused on honoring the farm’s history, using an ‘exploded’ floor plan to create separate but connected pods for privacy. Eastern hemlock siding, traditionally used in barns, was milled and weathered on-site to enhance the ‘barn’ aesthetic further.
The Results
The result is a thoughtfully designed Barn House seamlessly blending with its historical landscape. Using traditional materials and an innovative floor plan provides both privacy and a deep connection to the site, embodying the essence of its farm origins.
